If you have a company in Dubai, Corporate Tax is something you should not leave until the last minute. Many business owners are unsure where to register, what documents are needed, whether free zone companies are included, and whether registration means they immediately have to pay tax.

The good news: Corporate Tax registration in Dubai is an online process. Businesses register with the UAE Federal Tax Authority (FTA) through the Emara-Tax platform, the important part is making sure your business information and documents are correct before submitting.

What Is Corporate Tax Registration?

Corporate Tax registration means registering your business with the FTA for Corporate Tax purposes. Once approved, the FTA issues your registration details, including your Tax Registration Number.

Common confusion

Registering for Corporate Tax does not necessarily mean you will have Corporate Tax to pay. Registration is one compliance requirement – the actual tax payable is calculated separately, based on your taxable income and the applicable rules.

Who Has to Register?

This depends on the type of business you operate. Most companies and juridical persons under the UAE Corporate Tax system must register, including businesses on Dubai mainland, Dubai free zones, LLC structures, and other UAE-established entities.

Individuals carrying on a business in the UAE also fall within the requirement once annual business revenue exceeds AED 1 million, subject to applicable rules. “My business is small, so I don’t need to register” can therefore be misleading, your structure and the nature of your income both matter.

How to Register: Step by Step

The application is made online through the FTA’s Emara-Tax portal. Here’s what the process normally involves.

  1. Create an Emara-Tax account

If your business already has VAT registration, you may already have one.

  1. Create your taxable person profile

Enter company information that matches your trade licence and incorporation records exactly.

  1. Select Corporate Tax Registration

Start the application from your taxable person account; the portal guides you through it.

  1. Enter your business details

Company name, trade licence, legal structure, activities, address, ownership and signatory details, check your documents rather than relying on memory.

  1. Upload the required documents

Trade licence, incorporation/constitutional documents and ID for relevant individuals; the exact list varies by company.

  1. Check everything before submission

Company name, licence number, ownership and signatory details, and uploaded documents — correct any mismatch first.

  1. Submit the application

The FTA reviews it and may request more information. Once approved, your registration details appear in the FTA system.

Documents & Cost

Documents typically required

There isn’t one universal list – requirements depend on your legal structure, but it helps to have the following ready:

DocumentPurpose
Trade licenceConfirms business licence details
Certificate of IncorporationEstablishes the legal entity
MOA / AOACompany and ownership information
Commercial RegistrationSupports registration details
Passport & Emirates IDIdentification
Authorisation documentConfirms authority of the applicant

Cost and processing time

The FTA currently provides Corporate Tax registration free of government charges. A tax consultant or accounting firm may charge a separate professional service fee for completing it on your behalf.

Estimated application completion time is around 25 minutes, with service completion of up to 20 business days for a fully completed application. If the FTA requests clarification or extra documents, it can take longer, start early rather than waiting for the final few days.

Registration, Liability, Free Zones & VAT

Does registering mean I have to pay tax?

Not necessarily. Registration and Corporate Tax liability are two different things. The UAE system generally applies 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% above that, subject to applicable rules. Registering doesn’t by itself determine what you’ll owe.

What about free zone companies?

Free zone companies aren’t automatically outside Corporate Tax. The framework includes provisions for Qualifying Free Zone Persons, who may receive a 0% rate on qualifying income when conditions are met, this doesn’t apply to every type of income for every free zone company, so check your activities carefully.

Corporate Tax vs VAT

These are separate tax systems with different thresholds and rules. Having a VAT registration doesn’t mean Corporate Tax registration is automatically done, and vice versa, assess both separately.

Penalty for Late Registration

Important

The FTA has prescribed an AED 10,000 administrative penalty for failing to submit a Corporate Tax registration application within the applicable deadline. Waivers exist in certain circumstances, subject to FTA conditions, but it’s safer to confirm your deadline and register on time than rely on a possible waiver later.

After Registration & Common Mistakes

Getting your Corporate Tax registration number is not the end of your tax responsibilities. Depending on your circumstances, you may also need to:

  • Maintain proper accounting records and keep supporting business documents
  • Prepare financial information and determine taxable income
  • Submit Corporate Tax returns and pay tax, where applicable

Corporate Tax should be treated as an ongoing compliance matter, not a one-time registration exercise.

Common problems business owners face

Most issues aren’t complicated, they usually come from incomplete or inconsistent information: an old trade licence number, an unclear upload, incorrect ownership details, or information that doesn’t match company records. Another common issue is assuming a startup or free zone company automatically removes the registration requirement. If unsure, check before submission rather than correcting it afterwards.
